Toshiba Qosmio X770-10J Notebook Review

Never an easy feat for a laptop stand out from the crowd of gaming notebooks, but Toshiba Qosmio X770-10J he retires. The 17-inch laptop has it all: an interesting design, powerful, high-end hardware and smart features like the keyboard backlight and automatic graphics operation. Overall a very well rounded package that will be sure to attract more than a few buyers.

The popularity of gaming laptops have increased recently. The price of this laptop is high, even higher than a desktop PC equipped similarly. However, players who are enthusiastic on the road a lot or go to many LAN parties, be very satisfied with the performance of these "desktop replacement PC" models. Toshiba Qosmio X770 is a gaming platform that will surely interest attract many buyers.

At the time of this test, there were three different versions of the Qosmio is available. The entry cost us about 1300 euros and the codename: X770-10J. Prices can be high, but then our test model of 17 inches was equipped with a powerful high-end hardware. Let's start with the graphics card: Toshiba has chosen to DirectX 11-ready GeForce GTX 560M.

The processor, an Intel Core i7-2630QM, is now moving very fast quad-core. The 8 GB DDR3-RAM and storage capacity of 1,000 GB (500 GB + 500 GB HDD SSH) are equally attractive. The whole package comes complete with a Blu-ray combo drive (CD and DVD) and HD + screen (1600 x 900).

For another $ 100, the buyer can take the house of the X770-11W. The hard disk capacity increases to 640 GB, but the most significant upgrade is the screen: a screen of 120 Hz Full HD, which, in combination with the "shutter" glasses included in delivery (NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit), allows the user to enter the world of immersive 3D movie, photos and games.

The X770-107 (~ 1600 euros) is the top model, and is even better equipped than the other two. Instead of a Blu-Ray, the laptop is a true Blu-ray. Toshiba wants to attract fans of games and multimedia with this package. The main drawback of laptops is that they lack 3D Optimus, which means that only the least expensive laptop, the X770-10J, can automatically switch between integrated and dedicated graphics chip.

Case
Because the case design, Toshiba has gone off the beaten track and found a unique and interesting. The synthetic surface of the test model is decorated with a beautiful line of weaving, with the Qosmio X770 is also a mixture of consumer laptops.

The colors are a matter of taste tested by Toshiba, an old silver-gray finish behind and elect a new laptop attractive red. The materials used feel good, and sensitive even to monitor the borders and the glossy frame notebook, the surfaces of our test model seem resistant to dust and fingerprints.

The bottom of the notebook is very sturdy. On the other hand, the top of the screen can be deformed easily with both hands and base unit can be folded inward on both right and left sides. To be honest, we should note that most laptops have similar defects. The finish of our test model is fine. All parts are installed properly and transparently on the laptop.

Hinges left us a mixed review. On the one hand, we are very happy to see that the laptop does not swing down when the screen is open, but on the other hand, can the slightest movement of the base unit (as written) make the screen wobble.

In addition, the hinges are very stiff. The Qosmio X770 weighs just 3.6 kg proud. This, combined with the large (on the back of the laptop is six inches!), Means that users will not benefit from frequent transport of this model. The book is primarily intended for stationary use.

Connectivity and communication

Connectivity
Offering doors on our test model is very sparse. Toshiba did not give the X770 ExpressCard slot, Firewire, or eSATA port. Only two items are available in the audio input connections, but fortunately the HDMI connection can be used to produce surround sound systems. Video output is possible, as well as HDMI and VGA connectivity.

Toshiba has also installed a card reader, three USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port. Kensington lock the X770 can be used to secure the laptop and prevent theft. The location of the ports is not optimal: most of the ports that sit up front. This means that when the ports are in use, cables to clutter up the workspace and restrict the free space. This is a big problem when the user has an external mouse attached.

Communication
Communication modules are much more satisfying. An RJ-45 Gigabit LAN port and a WLAN module allows the use of wired and wireless Internet. In addition, the Qosmio X770 measuring WLAN b / g / n and Bluetooth 3.0.

Pre-installed software
Toshiba X770 is equipped with programs. There are a lot of unnecessary programs (about thirty of them is called "Toshiba xyz" - see screenshot). In short, the taskbar is already filled with a variety of icons and the user must be a continuous pop-ups. Startup time and response suffer. So it is recommended to remove unneeded programs.

Among the many programs installed on your laptop, we found some to be very useful. For example, Corel WinDVD Blu-ray means that the user does not have to buy additional software. Eco Utility has also been reported.

This utility allows the user to decide on a savings plan and look at the whole global consumption of the laptop. The PC Health Monitor (provides information about the system) and the optional hard disk protection (recognizes vibration) are also very useful.

Accessories
The contents of the package delivery is limited. The battery and AC adapter (model heavy W 180) are included along with a brief manual and some books. System recovery software is already on the hard drive in a hidden partition.

Warranty
Toshiba guarantees its customers a service period of two years (bring-in). Users who register their devices with Toshiba can leave their laptop to be picked up (Pick-up service).

Input Devices

Keyboard
The input devices in our test model was very good. Chiclet keyboard is 14x14 mm large keys. The buttons are located next to each other freely, and are not very loud when you type. The relatively smooth writing feeling can not satisfy everyone. We found that the race was too indefinite to be exact, spongy.

Aspect of the handset is not surprising. 17-inch unit has a separate numeric keypad. The red backlight is a great feature, which can remain in (or out) on a permanent or set in such a way that is activated when you enter. Toshiba has invested in the touch screen above the keyboard. Volume control, Wi-Fi module, Eco mode, and the backlight can be adjusted in this bar.

Touchpad
The touchpad in the test model is even better than the keyboard. Toshiba deserves praise for the 93x52 mm generous dimensions. This allows the user to move the mouse anywhere with ease. The surface is slightly rough balance between sensitivity and input. The touchpad can be easily placed in the dark thanks to its red bar.

Multi-touch support is another plus point. The driver with the active, the user can zoom and scroll with two fingers. The standard scroll bars (horizontal and vertical) is also integrated. The touchpad is very precise, and most of the inputs has been implemented correctly.

The touchpad can be easily switched off with the push of a button. However, we found a poor site. It's a big difference between the keyboard and touchpad and touchpad buttons have been better. Strong typing noise and decreases the overall impression of shaky quality.

Display
Unlike 11W and 107, makes X770-10J not come with a 3D-ready full-HD screen (120 Hz). Instead, our test model was equipped with a standard HD screen (60 Hz). The resolution of 1600x900 pixels is just right for the GeForce GTX 560M as normally do not have enough power to run the latest games in 1920x1080 pixels. Toshiba follows the trend and offers a 16:9 format and LED backlighting for the screen.

Damage: image quality is not good enough for gaming and multimedia platform. Toshiba Qosmio X770-10J made a run of the mill screen 15.8. A major weakness is the high black value of 0.82 cd / m² which makes the dark areas are gray. A large black, the value must be less than 0.4 cd / m².

The contrast is also bad: 265:1. High quality seems to rise about three times this level (see MSI GT780R). In spite of the anti-glare screen, the colors are not saturated, which means that the atmosphere of games and movies suffer. Only the brightness of 224.2 cd / m² (average) is good and is big enough to display all the contents.

The reflective surface of the screen is not suitable for outdoor use. Users will be treated outside of annoying reflections can be seen in the pictures below. The pressure in the eyes of these reflections is very uncomfortable. You suddenly wish a matte screen. Inside, the reflections are a problem, depending on the lighting and placement.

Not surprisingly, the viewing angle stability of the test pattern is not great. Quickly change the image, even a little 'in transition, and the monitor is constantly adjusted. So, the Qosmio X770 display is not suitable for watching movies with a lot of people.

Performance
Toshiba offers the high performance program for the user installing the Core i7-2630QM the X770. The Quad-Core is based on Intel's Sandy Bridge and 995 million transistors and 6 MB L3 cache (i5 series: 3 MB).

Turbo Boost function allows users to easily overclock the processor cores from 2.0 to 2.9 GHz (speed may vary depending on the CPU). Another interesting feature is the "Hyperthreading" technology that allows each core to simulate a core of virtual reality, and therefore allows the processor to work on eight threads simultaneously (4 + 4 virtual reality).

The manufacturing process is the latest 32 nm processor, but uses a lot of power. A TDP of 45 W is quite high for a mobile processor. Intel did for the high consumption by adding an integrated graphics chip (Figure HD 3000). All in all, the Qosmio X770 is well equipped and will certainly succeed in the near future because it is quite difficult to push the Sandy Bridge processors to their limits.

CPU Performance
The benchmarks show how a CPU Core i7-2630QM really is. The simple test-Core-performance 64-bit Cinebench R10, the popular dual-core Core i5-2410M is capable of producing the same level as the i7 2630QM. However, in the Multi-Core-Rendu, the 2410M is not a coincidence (see Schenker XMG A501) as it only has two cores, while our tester 2630QM four.

The Core i7-2630QM is leading with 17,018 points, while the i5-2410M far behind with 9781 points (a difference of 74%). The disparity of results falls in the 64-bit Cinebench R11.5: 4.26 versus 2.61 points (63%). In short, programs that can use more than two cores will be much happier with the quad core of our test model.

Graphic Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M

Our test model is the GeForce GTX 560M, which is cool for DirectX 11-ready graphics card. GTX 560M first high-end Nvidia graphics cards. Graphics cards only who wins, is the AMD Radeon HD 6990M and Nvidia GeForce GTX 580M own.

Compared to the GTX 580M, 560M GTX is a semi-shaders: instead of 384, our paper is "only" 192 points. On the other hand, clocked at 775 MHz (core), 1250 MHz (memory) and 1550 MHz (shader) is the best part of the 580M GTX (620/1500/1240 MHz). Video RAM GDDR5 (192-bit) is less than 1536 MB, while the 580M is 2048 MB.

The map was made with the 40 nm process and is based on the chip GF116, which is a member of the generation of Fermi ambitious. The high performance of the GTX 560M is due in part to its high number of transistors: 1.17 million euros. Currently, Nvidia offers the most features.

AMD cards offer video decoders and audio drivers, like their counterparts from Nvidia, but Nvidia cards offer features such as much higher, PhysX, a standard set half way to speed up the GPU-based physics. Additionally, users who do not want to pay more for a model with a screen of 120 Hz HDMI interface can be used to deliver 3D content to a 3D-ready monitor or TV monitor.

Nvidia Optimus
As mentioned earlier, the Qosmio X770-10J dynamically switch between integrated (Figure HD 3000) and dedicated graphics chip (GeForce GTX 560M). This automatic switching function is through technology Nvidia Optimus can already be found in many laptops. Since NVIDIA GPU stays off for less demanding tasks (such as Office, Internet, video, etc.), power consumption remains within limits. This is obviously good for battery life.

Optimus is a very sophisticated technology and reliable, although it has some issues. But in everyday use, the user should have no problems. Optimus running in the background and the user will rarely need to do something. Another great feature is the automatic updating of the switching technology graphics. Users who experience problems should take a look at our advice on Dell XPS 15th

GPU performance
Graphics performance is above average (laptop standards). The last 3DMark 11 (1280x720, Performance preset, Score GPU) GeForce GTX 560M (1777 points) ranged from a successful mid-range GT 540 (899 points @ GE620-i748W7P MSI) and Top Gun GTX 580M (3110 points @ Schenker XMG P501).

Beautiful Sky Unigine 2.1 benchmark (1280x1024, High, Normal, Tessellation, DirectX 11), a similar result: 27.0 fps, which is approximately 100% compared to the GeForce 540m score (13.4 fps), but less than 40% the GeForce GTX 580M (44.3 fps).

Performance Disk Drive (s)
Hard drives are a couple of X770 strange, a hard disk drive 500 GB (Seagate ST9500423AS) in association with a hybrid model of 500 GB (Seagate ST95005620AS). This provides the user with a mixture of HDD and SSD.

Thanks to the rapid speed of operation (7200 rpm), the two hard drives can provide high performance. In fact, the hard drive was slightly faster in our benchmarks the SSH (Hybrid Solid State =). On the other hand, the reader is performance better with SSH files that are accessed frequently, because they are stored in the flash SSD cache to allow quick access.

The disk storage system has a sequential read speed of 92.55 MB / s sequential write speed of 88.98 MB / s. The hard drive of 109.6 and 108.7 managed MB / s in the CrystalDiskMark reference. Access the same time the hard drive was a little better (15.4 vs 17.0 ms).

However, the duo of HDD / SSH is a great idea. Tip: Users who have a bit of money should consider buying a solid state drive (SSD). This will improve performance significantly, and the installation of the SSD will be easy because the two places on the hard drive is easily accessible.

Emissions

Noise emissions
When available or when the laptop is running less demanding applications, noise emissions are kept within acceptable limits. The fan runs continuously when cooler, but the user can still work comfortably with the laptop. While the games runs much cooler after a jump. At this point, the 17-inch model clearly audible, and depending on the type of game can even drown in the sounds of games.

The optical drive is another problem. We noted that even if the disc is playing a DVD or Blu-ray, hummed. However, it is not noticeable until the volume is not muted. All-in-all, the noise of the laptop is not that bad and not too large.

Temperature
Users should not expect that emissions at low temperatures of the Qosmio X770. When the laptop is under heavy load, the case heats up significantly to a maximum of 40 ° C in the area of palm rest. For a long period of use, that can turn home. At rest, the laptop is much cooler. 33 ° C was measured with our tools - a moderate value.

No nasty surprises await us below deck. According to the instrument hardware monitors, as well as the graphics card and the CPU was less than 80 ° C limit. However, stress test (Furmark and the first), we encountered a serious problem with Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M limit. Graphics card clocked up a lot less frequently. Throttling is a graphics card is much less common than the CPU. Fortunately, this limitation GPU is only when the computer is under full load.

Speakers
Large sound system is by far the best feature of the Qosmio X770. Toshiba has developed a sound system in collaboration with experts from the Harman / Kardon. Portable audio output (two cases), not subject to standards, an exceptionally large, natural and engaging. Thanks to the built-in subwoofer, the bass is also quite good - games, movies and music can really enjoy.

Dolby Audio-Enhancer menu (which can be found in properties "president" - see picture) amplifies the sound. External speakers are not necessary and Toshiba did a great job designing this speaker system. Very few notebooks like the Dell XPS 15 can maintain its position against the sound output of the Qosmio X770. The sound system is excellent, but the maximum could have been a little higher.

Battery life
Qosmio X770 uses very little energy (from 12.5 to 16.9 W) during idling with NVIDIA disabilities. We usually see these low values in laptops office. Under load, the GeForce GTX 560M graphics processing and consumption soars dramatically to: 112.8 to 194.0 watts, which is typical for a gaming notebook class. By comparison, a consumer MSI similarly equipped GT780R 123.8 to 195.0 watts under load (Idle: 24.9 to 34.8 watts).

A look at battery life may disappoint many users. Using the NVIDIA Optimus is praiseworthy, but this feature is of little surprise that the manufacturer has equipped the laptop with a battery of 47 Wh. At best, this capacity is moderate relative to the size of the battery (460 grams), is very thin. We expected at least 70 Wh. Under load, the 17-inch model is losing power. The Battery Eater Classic test with maximum brightness and saving the test pattern lasted just 41 minutes.

Operating time during playback of a DVD (a moderate energy savings) is not incredible, but just two hours and 14 minutes. Wireless surfing is only possible in three hours. For longer run time, the screen brightness to minimum, and energy-saving options are all turned on. Battery Eater Readers test showed that the 17-inch model can last up to 6 hours.

Verdict
Overall, we found the Qosmio X770-10J to be quiet good. Toshiba has launched a model with a unique design and many interesting features. The unusual color scheme and sound system of the laptop of 17 inches wide makes it stand out from the crowd. The integrated speaker system 2.1 has an elegant design speakers and the subwoofer gives a perfect sound.

The backlit keyboard is another feature not always found in laptops. This allows the user to work easily in the dark. The good performance is another strong point of the model. The Intel Core i7-2630QM offers fast performance, regardless of the task. Modern games work well on Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M, even with high details. Film fans will love the Blu-ray combo drive.

Sounds like a laptop perfect game, right? Well, almost. In some areas, the Toshiba Qosmio X770 is still a tune. For example, the screen quality is very poor. Users expect a good display of the price of 1300 euros. However, Toshiba has selected a panel of a typical Qosmio X770-10J cheap, that simply does not belong to high-end laptop.

Fortunately, it is more expensive 3D-ready laptops, Toshiba did install a good display. Connectivity scattered (not ExpressCard, eSATA or FireWire), wobbly screen cover, and reduced mobility (weight / size / battery life), there are more negative aspects.

In conclusion: gaming notebook falls less than a score of 80% in a bit. Buyers who are not concerned with image quality or if you want to use an external monitor, is the Toshiba Qosmio X770-10J to be a very interesting model.
